Keep Scotland Beautiful Eco-Schools

Why this award?

Our flagship programme, Eco-Schools has been running for 30 years.

  • There are almost 900 schools and nurseries across Scotland with current awards.
  • Schools who complete the Eco-Schools programme receive a Green Flag Award
  • To be successful all schools must achieve the Seven Elements: form an Eco-Committee, carry out an Environmental Review, write an Action Plan and carry it out, Measure if they have achieved their aims, involve their Community, link their learning to the Curriculum and create an Eco-Code.
  • The Green Flag Award is a whole school award, but the work is led by a group of pupils called the Eco-Committee

The Eco-Committee choose three topics, one must be Climate Action.

Who is it for?

The Green Flag Award is an internationally recognised achievement for schools and nurseries committed to Learning for Sustainability. Flags can be seen flying outside our schools all over Scotland.

Schools work for 1 year to gain their first award, or to rejoin the programme if their previous award has expired. Schools work for 2 years on each renewal application to maintain their award.
