Bikeability Scotland is the national cycle training programme for school children. It builds the skills, confidence and knowledge to ride on road and make journeys by bike.
Training is enjoyable, and pupils highlight the ‘real like skills’ they develop through training. Pupils in secondary schools who completed Bikeability cycle more frequently than those that did not.
Bikeability Scotland is aimed at primary age school children, usually delivered to pupils age 9 to 12. The primary school programme has two levels. Level 1 includes cycling games in a traffic free area (like a school playground) to develop cycle control skills. Level 2 introduces cycling on road, developing the key skills to make effective decisions while riding in traffic.
Training is organised and delivered in curricular time, and is fully funded.
Bikeability Scotland Level 1 can be completed in 2 to 4 hours.
Bikeability Scotland Level 2 includes at minimum of six hours of practical training, usually delivered during school hours.
Bikeability Scotland is certified by Cycling Scotland. Training can be used as evidence towards other awards.
